Schwinn Fitness and the Stationary Bike

Schwinn Fitness has long been in the business of designing, manufacturing, and selling bicycles.  Beginning as a company that primarily produced bicycles, it wasn't until the 1960s that the company would start producing home fitness equipment in the form of stationary bicycles.  Since entering into the fitness industry, Schwinn has become one of the leading brands in both recumbent and upright exercise bikes.  One of the major distributors of Schwinn Fitness products is Nautilus Inc., which is one of the best-known fitness equipment companies in the world.  Keep reading if you want to learn more about Schwinn Fitness.

Brief background

The company known as Schwinn Fitness began as a partnership between Adolph Arnold and Ignaz Schwinn in 1895.  The incorporation, then known as ěArnold, Schwinn & Companyî, specialized in manufacturing and selling bicycles.  The company would begin to gain recognition in the bicycle industry when they launched their racing program, which would be dominated by Schwinn bikes.  With its many innovations in bicycle designs, Schwinn quickly became one of the leading designers and manufacturers of bicycles, even supplying the US army with bikes during World War II.

It was in 1965 that Arnold, Schwinn & Company would begin designing and manufacturing the bicycle workout machines that have made Schwinn Fitness such a popular name in gyms worldwide.  Two years later, the company name was changed to Schwinn Bicycle Company, a company that would continue to dominate the bicycle market, especially exercise bicycles.  In 1998, Schwinn merged with GT bicycles, forming the Schwinn/GT Corporation.  Three years later, the Schwinn and GT brands are bought by Pacific Cycle, Inc.  That same year, Direct Focus Inc.  acquires the fitness equipment division of Schwinn/GT.  Direct Focus Inc.  would later be renamed the Nautilus Group, Inc., which is one of today's most renowned fitness equipment companies.  Schwinn Fitness exercise bikes have some of the leading technologies, features, and functions in the fitness industry.
