  About Treadmills
The Treadmill as Well-known Cardiovascular Workout Equipment

The treadmill is one of the oldest types of exercise equipment ever made.  In the most basic terms, a treadmill is a workout machine that allows you to walk, jog, or run while staying in place.  Although there have been many innovations in the world of fitness equipment, the treadmill is still one of the most popular and widely used exercise machines.  Whether you are looking to have an easy and relaxing walk or an intense and strenuous workout, the treadmill may just be the right choice for you.  Keep reading to learn more about the treadmill.

Brief history

Treadmills are often seen as great workout machines, but they actually began as equipment for the reformation of prisoners.  In the 1800s, misbehaved prisoners were made to walk up to thousands of feet on treadwheels and treadmills.  The first mechanized treadmills were used by hospitals as a form of exercise and rehabilitation.  It was not until 1950 that a treadmill was actually designed and built for the specific purpose of diagnosing cardiovascular diseases.  In the late 1960s and the 1970s, the benefits of using the treadmill were further researched, leading to a boom in the fitness industry.  Companies began designing, manufacturing, and selling treadmills as fitness machines for commercial and home use.  Today, treadmills come from numerous companies, under different brand names and with various state-of-the-art features.

Treadmill basics

The treadmill is considered a piece of fitness equipment that is low-impact.  Low-impact basically means that the impact on your joints and the rest of your body is not as great as other types of exercise.  Treadmills come in two categories: manual treadmills and motorized treadmills.  As the names of these treadmills suggest, the manual types do not move and are powered by the user, while the motorized kinds actually move the belt at a certain speed.  The motorized treadmills have become more popular because of the many feaTretures and functions that are packed into them.

Features

some of the features of a treadmill include the following:
- Adjustable speeds and inclines that can be used to set the conditions right for the perfect workout.
- Safety features, such as handles and rails, are important to ensure your safety in case you trip, fall, or get too tired to keep running.
- Pre-programmed and programmable workout regimens are also available in some treadmills.
- Some treadmills also have heart-rate monitors, exercise logs, and chest-wrap monitors to keep track of your cardiovascular workout.
