Know More about Elliptical Trainer Machines

Elliptical trainer machines are a type of stationary fitness equipment.  Often referred to as cross trainers or ellipticals, the elliptical trainer machine is primarily made for walking and running exercises.  Those who are thinking of buying fitness equipment for the home or for commercial use may want to get elliptical trainers, because they have a number of advantages over similar machines, such as treadmills.  Whether the exercise is meant for keeping in shape or for rehabilitation purposes, ellipticals are great choices.  Read on to learn more about the elliptical trainer, its history, and the different features that are commonly found in ellipticals.

Elliptical trainer basics

The need for elliptical trainers came about because of the high impact that other types of exercise machines would have on the body.  Treadmills and steppers would often require an up-and-down motion that causes high impact on the joints.  The impact would often cause injuries or complications.  In an attempt to minimize the impact and create a more safe and efficient exercise machine, the elliptical trainer was conceived.  The elliptical trainer got its name from the egg-shaped movement of the foot pedals on the machines.  The reason the elliptical movement is favorable is because it is a continuous movement that doesn't cause impact stress on the body.

Brief history of ellipticals

In 1995, the first elliptical machine was designed, developed, and manufactured by a well-known fitness equipment company named Precor.  Precor's research and development branch pioneered the technology that resulted in the first elliptical fitness crosstrainer.  The model that was made by Precor was only meant for lower body workout through pedaling.  Features for upper-body workout were added by Reebok, when they made the Personal Trec.  Both Reebok and Precor have gained recognition for the advancements that they made in fitness equipment.  Throughout the years, the basic design and function of the elliptical trainer has been improved on with the addition of various features and functions.

Features to look for in ellipticals

Adjustable resistance ń The adjustable resistance is a feature that allows you to increase or decrease the resistance depending on your exercise program and your physical fitness.
Upper-body option ń With the upper-body option, you can burn more calories by working out both your upper and lower body.
Adjustable incline ń Just like the adjustable resistance feature, the adjustable incline allows you to choose the perfect incline for your level of workout.

Aside from these useful features of elliptical trainer machines, you may also want to consider getting elliptical trainers that are quiet and have a smooth motion.  Comfort and safety are key, so try to test the equipment to make sure you feel secure and comfortable before you purchase it.
